Fibromyalgia and Me

Do I have fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia can affect anyone; however, it is much more common for women to develop this condition than men. In fact, the National Institutes of Health states that between 80-90% of people diagnosed with fibromyalgia are women.

The average age of people diagnosed with fibromyalgia is 35-45, but it is possible for it to develop at any adult age. 4 million Americans, aged 18 and older live with fibromyalgia.

The exact causes of fibromyalgia are still unclear, although some medical experts believe it may be caused by an overactive sympathetic nervous system – the part of your body that elicits “fight or flight” responses. This theory makes sense, as people tend to develop their first symptoms of fibromyalgia after experiencing a physically or emotionally traumatic event, though it has never been scientifically proven.

It is common for fibromyalgia to first present itself as recurring periods of anxiety, intense stress, or depression. Other symptoms tend to build over time. These may include:

  • Chronic and/or sharp muscle pains.
  • Fatigue.
  • Tender areas of the body.
  • Disrupted sleep cycles/irregular sleep schedules.
  • Fluctuations in the mood.
  • Forgetfulness or disorientation.
  • Sensitivity to touch/numbness.
  • Nausea.

If you have a family member who has been diagnosed with fibromyalgia in the past, it is more common for you to develop it. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of fibromyalgia, you are not alone. Therapy Choice will treat your symptoms accordingly so you can get back to living life on your own terms.
